This letter is to serve as confirmation that Mr. xxx, recent graduate of Tongji University in
Shanghai, was approved for graduate study in the Department of Civil Engineering and
Geological Sciences at the University of XXXXX in the United States. Mr. xx was admitted
to the PhD program at our university in June of 2004.
Mr. xx’s admission to our PhD program was based on my recommendation, as his future graduate advisor. Our university was very impressed by the strong mathematical and technical background he received in his education in China and found his writing and communication skills more than satisfactory to succeed in earning a PhD in Civil Engineering within our program. Like all Tongji students that have studied at XXXX University, we are confident Mr. xx willbring great pride to his country through a successful graduate career in the United States.
Under my direction, Mr. xx will begin a research program in our Structural Dynamics and Monitoring Laboratory working on a variety of problems closely related to Structural Health Monitoring and evaluation of Civil Infrastructure. Our work includes both laboratory and fullscale experimentation to improve our understanding of structural behavior and performance assessment. His analytical and experimental research program will be supplemented by interdisciplinary coursework, department seminars, teaching assistantships and community
outreach activities that will all help to further develop Mr. xx as an engineer and citizen of the world.
We are very hopeful that Mr. xx will be able to join us in January 2005 in time for the start of our Spring semester. Please let me know if there is any further information I can provide to help in the visa application process.
