Arizona:
The personal essay should briefly describe why you want to pursue the Ph.D. in Astronomy, why you have chosen the University of Arizona, what your scientific interests are, and what your goals are for the future.
Caltech:
on a separate document, please provide a brief statement of your scientific and professional interests and objectives. Include a description of your past accomplishments that are not evident from the examination of other documents submitted. Report, if applicable, on any research in progress. The statement must be written by the applicant in English. It must not be written in another language and translated for the applicant by another person.
Chicago:
Please discuss your academic and career objectives. Be as specific as you can about the field in which you plan to study and your particular research interests. Beyond what is apparent from your transcripts, describe preparation for proposed program of study, including research projects in which you have participated, and mathematics, computer, and language training where appropriate. Your statement is an important part of your application. It should be clear, concise, and well-crafted. In order to submit your statement online, you must
limit your statement to 2500 words or less.
Cornell:
A one- or two-page statement, preferably printed on white paper, stating your reasons for undertaking raduate work, as well as an explanation of your academic interests, including their relation to your undergraduate study and professional goals. Include your full name and your proposed field of study at the top of each page.
JHU:
On a separate piece of paper, with your name and the name of the department to which you are applying listed at the top, please tell us anything you would like us to know about your future goals and how graduate study at Johns Hopkins would help you to achieve those goals.
PSU:
This should be a brief (1 or 2 page) essay explaining or elaborating your interest and background in astronomy. For example, why are you interested in pursuing a career in astronomy? What astronomy-related books or articles have you read recently? How does graduate study at Penn State relate to your career plans?
UCLA:
The statement of purpose is very important and is carefullyconsidered in the selection process. Be concise and specific. Your name,proposed major, degree objective, and term for which you are applying must appear on the form.
Stanford:
The statement of purpose should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford, your preparation for this field of study, study and research interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study.
UCI:
State your general reasons for undertaking graduate work at the University of California, Irvine, and your specific interest with respect to the program to which you are applying. The admissions committee must determine whether or not your objective can be satisfied within that program. You may wish to include career objectives, research interests and experience, and your intended area of specialization.please give a brief occupational resume if any significant period has elapsed since you were last enrolled in an academic institution.
Put your SOP on-line in order to keep all information together. If your SOP is extremely long (more than 5 pages) please print it out separately. Go to this site: http://www.rgs.uci.edu/grad/contact/prgm_dir.htm - choose the "mailing address only" for the Department where you are applying. Mail your SOP to this address. If your FULL NAME AND DEPARTMENT SHOWN are not printed clearly on this Statement of Purpose... it will not be processed with your application.

Harvard:
Be sure your statement of purpose outlines your goals for graduate study. This is very important to academic departments in deciding whether to recommend admission.Describe your reasons and motivations for pursuing a graduate degree in your chosen program of study at Harvard. What experiences led you to your research ambitions? Concisely state your past work in your intended field of study and in related fields. Briefly indicate your career objectives. Your statement should not exceed 1,000 words. Applicants to Chemical Physics and Chemistry and Chemical Biology should follow these instructions: For the Statement of Purpose, please provide a brief statement, not exceeding 300 words, of your scientific and professional interests and objectives. For Research Accomplishments, please provide a statement, not exceeding 500 words, of your research accomplishments or current projects. In the event that undergraduate research opportunities have not been available to you, please discuss other science projects, reading projects, etc., that you have undertaken.
Maryland:
State of goals部分：
Write a brief 400-600 word statement concerning your reasons for undertaking graduate study. Indicate, if appropriate, any specific areas of research interest. You may wish to discuss past work in your intended field and allied fields and outline your plans for a professional career. If there are special financial or academic circumstances you wish to bring to the attention of the graduate committee, please feel free to do so.
State of experience部分：
Write a brief 400-600 word statement describing any life experiences that you have had that you feel have prepared you to pursue a graduate degree at a large, diverse institution such as University of Maryland. Among the items you may care to include would be how your interest in or knowledge of your chosen field developed, your community and family background, whether you are the first person in your family to pursue a higher education, or any other factors that you feel would contribute to the diversity of our academic community. Finally, give us some examples of your determination to pursue your goals, your initiative and ability to develop ideas, and/or your capacity for working through problems independently.
Notre Dame:
Applicants must write a statement of about 300 words describing their purpose in undertaking graduate work, including an explanation of their research and study interests and how those interests relate both to their preparation for graduate study and to their professional goals.The applicant’s full name, log ID,intended department, and Social Security number (if any) must appear on the statement. There is no official form for the Statement of Intent; applicants can submit this document on their own paper or letterhead. Please submit two
copies of the Statement of Intent.
Rochester:
Please provide information about yourself, your career goals, reasons for entering your chosen field, area of interest in that field, and any research or clinical experience.PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FULL NAME AND SSN(OR DATE OF BIRTH) ARE ON ALL THE PAGES OF THE PERSONAL STATEMENT.
